Author: Jack London
Genre: Adventure
Characters: Buck – a strong dog with long warm hair. He was born at Judge Miller’s place. He lived there for fours years of his life with other dogs. He was a loyal companion. In his life he lived with six different owners.
Judge Miller and his children were the first family. It was a rich family.
Perrault was another one of his owners. He bought Buck from the man with the red sweater. Perrault liked Buck very much.
François is one of Perrault’s friends. He is a big man with a black face. He is a fair man, he was proud of Buck.
There were many dogs like Sol Leko, Curly, Dub, Dave, Billy, Pike, Spitz. Some of them were Buck’s enemies and some were his friends. Spitz was the worst enemy of Buck.
Hal, his sister Mercedes, and her husband Charles were Buck’s masters. They were very nasty with Buck and other dogs. But they abandoned Buck. They left him with…
John Thornton was the last person to take care of Buck. He was proud of Buck. He was the kindest owner Buck had.
Story:
The beginning of Buck’s life was rather quiet, since he was living in the care of the rich family, Judge Miller’s. His life took a drastic turn when the gardener-helper abducted him, to sell him as a husky. Since it was the gold rush time, it was an easy way to make money for him and his family. His new owner, the man with the red sweater, tried to tame him in brutal ways before selling him to someone else: Perrault and François. That is where Buck lived with the other dog, Curly, who ends up dying under the horde dogs’ bites. This way, Buck learns about the law of Club and Fang. With Perrault and François he travelled a lot as a husky, crossing the Klondike, rivers, becoming physically exhausted. In the end, he kills another dog, Spitz, escaping death and becoming the horde’s chief, being now a much wilder dog. For some reason, he is then sold to Hal, Mercedes, and Charles, working for the Post Office. These new owners exhausted him even further, mistreating him constantly. Hal, Mercedes, and Charles, engaging in a very dangerous trip over a frozen lake that is threatening to break open, they die as John had warned them it would happen. Fortunately, Buck refused to participate in that trip and had stayed with John. That is when Buck’s life took a new turn again for the better, with John taking care of him as no owner had done before. John died murdered by some Indians and Buck is left to himself, that is when he chose to go off for a wild life in the forest with wolves.
My Opinion:
I like this book. But there were some passages that were a bit dramatic, I don’t really like those passages. I’m crazy about wolves and I’m fond of adventure books, so it was a good book. I think reading in English is a good exercise, but it was a difficult book, The Call of the Wild. Sometimes, I don’t understand what the meaning of a word is, but in the sentence, I can understand it. Maybe I understood the story, but some details were not really understood.
