The Hound of the Baskervilles
Author: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote several stories about the detective between 1887 and 1930. The most famous are A Study in Scarlet, which is the first Sherlock Holmes story, and The Hound of the Baskervilles.
Genre: detective novel
Characters: The famous detective Sherlock Holmes and his friend Doctor Watson. Sherlock Holmes lives at 221b Baker Street in London. He is famous for his extraordinary faculties of observation and deduction. In films and in pictures, he is always wearing a deerstalker.
He is assisted by his friend Doctor Watson. John H. Watson is the narrator of all the Holmes stories. He is a loyal companion of the detective. He accompanies Holmes in his adventure. He is an intelligent man and Holmes can trust him.
Story:
A part of the story happens in London. Afterwards, Watson has to go to Baskerville hall in Devonshire.
Sherlock Holmes tries to find the murderer of Charles Baskerville. A legend says that he was killed by a hound. He has to protect Henry Baskerville, who is heir to Charles. When Henry Baskerville goes to the Hall, Holmes asks Watson to leave with him to protect him and to discover clues…
My Opinion:
I liked reading this book very much even if it was a little bit difficult to understand. The story was interesting, but I had to read the end three times because I did not understand it very well.

Title: The Hound of the Baskervilles
Story (plot): Doctor Mortimer goes to Baker Street to inform Holmes and Watson that Charles Baskerville succumbed to a heart attack in his field on Dartmoor. He then tells the legend of the cursed dog which has haunted the Baskerville family for generations and would like Holmes to enquire into this dog to protect Henry Baskerville. Henry Baskerville lived in Canada but has returned from now on to live on the property at Baskerville. On his arrival, he receives an anonymous message telling him to move away from the moor.
Holmes, too occupied, send Watson to escort Sir Henry to Dartmoor with Dr Mortimer. On the spot, they learn that a convict, Selden, has escaped from a nearby prison. In the residence of his ancestors, Henry meets and falls in love with Beryl Stapleton, the sister of Jack Stapleton, a collector of local butterflies. Barrymore, Henry’s butler, is surprised supplying Selden, the escaped convict, who is in fact his brother in law. While Henry and Watson in vain continue to search the moor, Watson sees a mysterious silhouette far off, of a man standing on a peak of rock. Barrymore also tells them that Selden has seen the stranger on the moor face to face. Watson then decides to leave to look for this mysterious person and discovers that it is Holmes. He was carrying out a solo investigation. Holmes discovered that the true murderer is Jack Stapleton, who is in fact married to Beryl. As night fell, Holmes and Watson heard a wild cry and growls. They discover the mutilated dead body of Selden. On his return to the manor, Holmes passes in front of the portraits of the family of Baskerville and realizes the remarkable similarity with Jack Stapleton and discovers that he is in fact the son of his brother Charles.
Holmes persuades Henry, who must go to dinner at the Stapletons’, to return on foot by the moor. Holmes and Watson go to the station to simulate a departure towards the capital but rather welcome Lestrade of Scotland Yard and leave with him to tackle Stapleton. After the dinner, Henry leaves the house and goes onto the misty moor. He is attacked by the dog a few moments later. Holmes draws a gun and kills the monster. He realizes that it is only a normal dog but of an exceptionally large size. Stapleton, being a descendant of Baskerville, was hoping to get rid of Henry Baskerville to have his relationship recognized and to inherit the estate.
Opinion: I liked this book because I like the detective novel and the story of Holmes. Because he sees everything and it is generally simple as when he discovers that it is a Doctor just by seeing his walking stick. I think that the next book if there is another one of them will be a book by Conan Doyle.

The Hound of the Baskervilles
My opinion.
I choose this book because I read it when I was 13 and it's a story that I like very much. I love detective novels, especially when there is a lot of suspense. For example, I liked it and I was very afraid when the characters went into the house of the Baskervilles and they heard hounds in the mountains.
Otherwise, I often read Sherlock Holmes's investigations because he's an intelligent man and his stories are really interesting. Unfortunately, the vocabulary is very complicated and I didn't completely understand the story and the end was especially complicated.
To conclude, I liked this story very much and I'm pleased to have chosen this book.
