The House by the Sea
Title: The House By The Sea
Author: Patricia Aspinall
Genre: Thriller
Main Characters: Carl and Linda Anderson.
Setting: It takes place in London and in a village called Little Moreton.
Story: At the beginning, Carl meets and old friend, John, and he decides to tell him his story. He says that when things started to be wrong between Linda (his wife) and him, they bought a house by the sea to spend their weekends. But Carl was very busy and he worked every weekend. One day, he asked Linda to come to their holiday house with him. She had to meet her husband at Little Moreton’s station, but she did not arrive. Then Carl tells John about is worry and his tiredness after his route to find Linda.
Opinion: I liked reading this book very much because it was not very difficult to understand and the story was original. I think the end is a bit strange, but I found it good because I do not really like happy endings. It was interesting because at the beginning and at the end the narrator is not the main character (Carl), but his friend (John). We do not know what happened to Carl after he told his story.

Title: The House by the Sea
Author: Patricia Aspinall
Genre: Thriller
Main Characters:
Carl and Linda Anderson – Carl is a businessman and lives in London. His wife’s name is Linda, she is beautiful and bought the house by the sea. They met at university and married a few years ago.
There are also other characters like John, a journalist and an old friend of Carl’s, Mary Banks, the owner of the Ancient Mariner pub in Little Moreton, and Tom Parker, who lives in a car on the beach at Little Moreton.
Story:
The story takes place in London and in a village called Little Moreton. It’s a moment in Carl and Linda’s life.
At the beginning, Carl meets an old friend, John, and he decides to tell him his story. He says that when things started to go wrong between Linda and him, they bought a house by the sea to spend their weekends. But Carl was very busy and he worked every weekend.
One day, he asked Linda to come to the house with him. She had to meet her husband at Little Moreton’s station, but she didn’t arrive. Then Carl tells John about his worries and his tiredness after his route to find Linda.
Here is she? Why didn’t she arrive? What has happened?
My Opinion:
I found this story interesting and surprising because it’s a very original story.
Indeed, there are lots of events that we can’t foresee, like the head of a fish found in Carl’s bed, it was very unexpected and that gives a lot of suspense. Unfortunately, the author often repeats the same things and it becomes a bit tiresome.
However, there is a change of narrator because it’s John who speaks at the beginning and at the end of the story. The end is also sad but it’s good because it changes from other stories, like those I read before.
Otherwise the reading is easy enough even for a level B1. At the beginning, I was a bit afraid I would not understand, but there are not a lot of differences between the levels A and B. There are only more pages and no pictures.
To conclude, I liked this book very much and I’m pleased to have chosen it. But I had to say that I didn’t have enough time and I had to sacrifice my weekend to read it.
