Story:
Information on Susie and the Beast
Susie: She’d started having bad dreams several weeks ago, the night after her father died. Her mother had died when she was a baby. She wanted a child. A child for her father’s lost life.
The Beast: She’s half human and half wolf. Sometimes, for example, she’s and animal of the night like a bat, a wolf, or an owl. Sometimes, she’s a ghost. Or she is a beautiful man or woman. She is Susie’s worst nightmare.
Susie and Charlie decide to go on holiday to Llandafydd. On the road, they stop at a pub. The Black Dog pub. While they have a rest, they hear part of a conversation between two men: Richard and Tom. Tom said that he found two sheep dead. Richard thinks that it was the Beats of Brynmawr who killed them. He explains to him that this beats is half man and half wolf. Susie and Charles leave again and stop at Cynghardy House. Susie wakes up during the night because she believed she heard her name and a strange noise. She got up and went to look out of the window, the wind is strong outside. Finally, she regained her bed and went back to sleep. Beside Charlie.
The next morning, they had their breakfast in their room and when Susie opened the door, she shouted. Charlie arrived and discovered a dead sheep at the door. Susie tells Charlie what happened during the night. She asks him if he thinks that it’s the Beats of Brynmawr. Susie wants to go to Brynmawr Hill, and once they arrive there, Charlie leaves for one moment. It starts to rain and when he returns, Susie has fallen asleep. When she woke up, she tells him that she heard the noise of an animal when she wanted to take a photo. The noise of a wolf, maybe. A few days later, they return to the pub. There is snow on the road, and in the middle, a man. Charlie wants to go slow, but with the snow, he slips. When Susie opens her eyes, she calls Charlie, but there is no answer. She hears a voice at the side of the road but there is nobody there. A Land Rover arrived and a man got out of the car. Susie explained everything to him, and when she recognises the man, it’s Tom. He helps them, Susie calls for help, and while waiting for them to arrive, she speaks to Tom.
Charlie is in hospital with a broken arm and leg. During the day, Richard came to join them and they spoke to each other. That night, Susie had a dream where a voice said to her: ‘Come with me,’ but she did not manage to identify the voice.
The next morning, Susan receives a call from Kathryn, Tom’s wife, who asks her whether all is well. Richard arrived at midday and asks her to come to his house. On the road, they pass by a group of men in dark jackets. Susie thinks that it is for the Beast of Brynmawr, and Richard agrees with her. When they arrive at Richard’s house, Susie is filled with wonder at the splendour in front of her and thinks that it must be a rich man’s house. When they arrive in the living room, Richard offers Susie a coffee, but Susie is annoyed because she wanted to see Charlie in hospital. They are drinking coffee when suddenly the room becomes darker and a strange light passes in Richard’s eyes. Then, the dream began.
She is in shadows, and the voice speaks to her, but this time, this voice, she recognises it.
When she wakes up, she does not know anymore where she is, then she remembers she is at Richard’s house and remembers the dream. Was this a dream? It does not matter. It is necessary that she escape. She takes a car and goes to Tom’s. On the road she passes the tree where she took a photo. She stops and looks there, she hears a strong and terrible noise, like a wolf. It was not a dream, it was reality. But while looking at it more closely, she realizes suddenly that it’s not an animal, it’s a man. A voice speaks behind her, she recognises this voice, it’s Tom.
Later, she is at Tom and Kathryn’s in their living room. She stays there for a moment. Susie is worried about Charlie, and she asks Kathryn if she can phone. Kathryn tells her that Tom went to see him and that he was well. She also says that she left her tings at Richard’s and Tom has gone to get them. When he returns, he gives something – a large heavy black belt with a silver dog’s face. Then, after a moment, Susie says that she would like to see Charlie. Tom takes her along.
My Opinion:
I liked this book, even when I did not understand it very well. What I found difficult was the structure of the sentences. The vocabulary was not enormously difficult. I really did not understand the passages where the Beast speaks (the structure of the sentences, the vocabulary), but I understood the main ideas of the story. What annoyed me a little, was that there were passages which appeared important to me and I did not understand them. I missed ideas there which could have helped me really understand the story. But on the whole I understood and liked the Beast.
